Legacy Project (2014-)
The Legacy Project originally focused on giving gratitude and honor to my personal ancestors but has expanded to include other friend's ancestors as well as iconic figures in history. I chose to emulate the old African American Church fan as the base for the artwork, giving honor to my Virginia roots on my mother's side, creating my own fan from wood and including images of family members, etc., as the focal point with mixed media that I felt channeled their energy best.
The project started as a way to honor the passing of my father in 2011, and as a way to break a creative block I experienced after his death. I enjoy interacting with old vintage photographs, communing with ancestral energy and feeling a sense of comfort with their presence. I see this as not only a celebraton of my family and favorite icons, but a honoring the grace and tenacity of a by-gone era.
